Calif. High Court To Review CNN Video Captioning Row

The California Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to provide guidance on the state’s Disabled Persons Act in a proposed class action brought by disability rights advocates against CNN over closed-captioning for online video clips that was partially dismissed by the Ninth Circuit in February. 

The state’s highest court agreed to answer a question certified to it by the Ninth Circuit over whether the state law — which provides that disabled individuals are entitled to full and equal access to accommodations and privileges of all “places of public accommodation” to which the general public is invited — covers nonphysical places, such as websites.
