LIONEL SMITH is accustomed to being asked awkward questions about his driving licence

How did you get it, what was it like learning, how do you hear what is going on around you, what about emergency service vehicle sirens?

Smith, you see, is deaf.

He has some questions of his own: what do hearing people hear when they are driving with their windows up, music blaring, carrying on conversations, using their cellphones? How much of their attention can they devote, in such circumstances, to what is happening around them on the road?
